Green Composting Facility - Croydon
For many years Phoenix have been involved with various "green" projects. Mostly these projects have been involved with preventing pollution.
"Green" waste composting plants are under consideration in many areas of the UK and in line with our plans to expand our activities in this area Phoenix have recently completed the first stage ( six tunnels ) specifically designed for Green Waste Composting.
On this project Phoenix won the contract to supply the whole electrical and controls package.
Power was taken from a local transformer at 640 amps per phase.
Cabling systems incorporated a mixture of SWA, Galvanised Conduit, Copper Braided CY, Screened Multicore and Jelly Filled Cables.
Motor speeds are adjusted automatically using 12 X inverter drives on a multidrop Modbus link to the PLC.
49 temperature points are monitored and logged along with 6 X flows and 6 X Oxygen levels.
Air intake, to control temperature and Oxygen, is achieved by 6 X modulating air dampers.
All operator interfacing is via our Dlog package running on a desktop PC.
The contract consultants were Enviros, the civil contractors were Ascot Environmental and the M & E contractors were Hytech-Water.
Leachate Treatment Plant - Warrington
In our case, put simply, Leachate is water that has been polluted by percolating through landfill rubbish.
Phoenix have been involved with Leachate Treatment Plants since 1993. We have successfully completed 18 full plants. Many have been extended and upgraded during this period.
Phoenix were contracted to undertake the entire electrical works. The project was completed in 2001.
Power was taken at 1250 amps from on-site generators. All design, installation and commissioning was carried out by Phoenix.
The plant consists of two raw leachate balance tanks, three treatment tanks and a treated effluent balance tank. Discharge is then via reed beds into the river Mersey. Two control rooms were built within shipping containers to house the four motor control centres and four SCADA PCs.
All controls are networked with site wide ethernet cabling enabling all plant to "talk" to each other.
This plant can treat 450m3 of Leachate per day.
Some of the Equipment used :
36 motors up to 18.5 KW, 4 PLCs, Power Factor Correction, 12 depth sensors, 4 SCADA PCs, Street Lighting, 6 Dissolved Oxygen monitors, 2 Electrically Actuated Valves, UPS for Controls, 6 pH monitors, 18 Air Dampers, Trace Heating, 2 Flow Meters, Alarm Dial Out, Remote Access
The civil contractors were May Gurney and the M & E contractors were Hytech-Water.
Lagoon pH Buffering (quarry water run off)
Phoenix were approached by the UK arm of the USA company KEECO, to develop an automated control system for pH adjustment of quarry waters.
Water is collected in lagoons and pumped through the treatment plant, where the pH is monitored before and after dosing, to maintain the lagoon within operator set parameters.
The control parameters were defined by the KEECO UK engineering staff, and Phoenix designed and built a control panel with DLOG SCADA interfacing to control the plant.
All design, build, PLC software, SCADA configuration, installation and testing was undertaken by Phoenix staff.
pH levels both in and out of the plant along with flow rates and various tank levels were integrated to form a predictive dosing control that was able to maintain within 0.1 pH.
A "Slurry" system was later designed by Phoenix which pre-mixed the powder before treatment.
The contract consultants were KEECO the client undertook the civil works, and the Electrical contractors were Phoenix.
Mixed Species Abattoirs - Cornwall & Devon
Phoenix have completed two new build abattoirs where they undertook the complete electrical design, build and installation.
Abattoirs have a mix of environments, therefore need careful consideration when designing the electrical installation.
Scalding baths, hosepipes, overhead conveyors and other machinery in various combinations all add up to a challenging design project.
Each project involved design and installation of the normal lighting and power within the unit (holding pens to cold rooms), staff welfare facilities and offices.
Specialist plant included industrial refrigeration blast freezers and cold rooms, fire alarm system, intruder alarm system, emergency lighting, telephone system and hot water boilers.
The main contractors were J B Refrigeration, and the Electrical contractors were Phoenix.
Cooling System Controls Update - Devon
Phoenix were approached by BNFL and LaMonde Research to look into the replacement of an ageing PLC installation at a BNFL nuclear power station.
The system was part of the control for the cooling water for one of the site reactors.
It was required to replace the obsolete PLC and code with a new unit but interface with the old remote I/O.
BNFL also wished to bring this installation onto the site-wide Intranet and install a local operator interface.
Phoenix were nominated for this work within a wider contract that eventually resulted in Phoenix working for Balfour Kilpatrick.
The work involved the supply, coding and installation of a new PLC, PC and SCADA system.
All the work was successfully completed to BNFL standards in 1998 and is still in use.
Leachate Treatment Plant - East Ayreshire
A full mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control installation to a process design by Enviros Consulting.
The project was undertaken using a partnership type approach with very little paperwork and only 3 formal meetings.
A rectangular tank design was used to speed up construction and allow the tank build to be kept "in house" (Barr Contracting).
Some M & E equipment detail:
- 6 X 18.5KW Landia aerators (controls installed for 8).
- 1 X Skid mounted 2 pump set (from TT Pumps).
- 4 X Submersible pumps from TT Pumps.
- 1 X Plug valve & Actuator from TT Pumps & Auma.
- 3 X Dosing pumps from Signal pumps.
- 1 X 35M³ caustic soda storage tank from Forbes.
- Instrumentation from Hach Lange.
- Control design, panel build, SCADA & software - Phoenix Engineering.
